Termly Dinner: The Rt. Hon. Lord Howard of Lympne CH PC QC

Michael Howard was first elected in 1983 for Folkestone and Hythe. After a string of junior ministerial positions, including jobs which gave him responsibility for the poll tax and water privatisation, Margaret Thatcher, Ex-President, Somerville College, appointed him to the Cabinet as Secretary of State for Employment in 1990. In this role, he was responsible for the Employment Act 1990, which made the closed shop illegal. Lord Howard supported Lady Thatcher in the 1990 leadership contest and retained his Cabinet post after its conclusion.

After the 1992 election, he was briefly Secretary of State for the Environment, before being appointed Home Secretary in 1993. Famously declaring “prison works”, Lord Howard implemented a necessary toughening of the justice system. Amongst other things, private prisons were introduced, tough mandatory sentences brought in and the right to silence curtailed. Lord Howard presided over a 15% fall in crime.

Lord Howard held a number of senior shadow positions after 1997, including Shadow Home Secretary, Shadow Foreign Secretary and Shadow Chancellor, before being elected to the Party Leadership in 2003. He led the Party in the 2005 general election, where Labour’s lead in the popular vote was cut from its 2001 figure of 9% to under 3%.

Lord Howard retired from frontbench politics after 2005. In 2010, he joined the House of Lords and was appointed a Companion of Honour (CH) in 2011.

Termly Dinner: Graham Brady MP, Chairman of the 1922 Committee

Our termly dinner speaker will be Graham Brady MP. Graham is Chairman of the 1922 Committee, representing the entire parliamentary party, arguably the most powerful position open to a Tory backbencher. Known in Westminster as “one of the few people with the Prime Minister on speed dial”, it is the letters of ‘no confidence’ which sit in his safe which alone can trigger a leadership election. He more than anyone knows the mood of the Party.

A frontbencher until 2007, he resigned as Shadow Europe Minister in protest against the party leadership’s opposition to selective education.  Brady went to grammar school in Trafford, where he is now an MP, and is a passionate campaigner for extending selection in schools.

A reprise of the meet-up which some veterans may remember (or not remember) from last Trinity, OUCA plan to engage with the enemy over a curry and a surfeit of supermarket booze. Expect to hear the national anthem drowning out the ‘Red Flag’, and some hideous sconcing. BYOB.

Termly Dinner with The Hon. Jacob Rees-Mogg MP

The pinnacle of the term, we are privileged to be joined by The Hon. Jacob Rees-Mogg MP.

Mr Rees-Mogg was President of the Association in Hilary Term 1991. He pursued a successful career in investment banking before being elected to represent North East Somerset in 2010.

In Parliament, Mr Rees-Mogg is renowned for his character, charm and charisma on the floor, his staunch euroscepticism and defence of traditional conservatism. He has been noted as one of the most rebellious Conservative MPs, whilst he has garnered broader attention following recent appearances on Have I Got News For You.

At just £39 for current members and £45 for Association alumni this is one of the most affordable Termly Dinners of late. This includes a champagne reception, fabulous four course meal, a healthy allowance of wine and port to finish.

Tickets may be purchased online, or pay direct to the Treasurer (cash/cheque/bank transfer): harry.challands@some.ox.ac.uk
