Kenneth Baker, Ex-President, Magdalen College, was first elected to Parliament in a 1968 by-election and was PPS to Edward Heath, Ex-President, Balliol College, while he was Leader of the Opposition after 1974.  After a number of junior roles, he became a Cabinet minister in 1985 as Environment Secretary and was later appointed Education Secretary. In this role he was responsible for a number of lasting and significant reforms, such as the introduction of the National Curriculum, GCSEs and Key Stages. He subsequently served as Party Chairman and, later, as Home Secretary under John Major.
