Educated at Greenhead Grammar School and Leeds Polytechnic, Mr Pickles was Chairman of the Young Conservatives in his twenties and elected as a Councillor in Bradford in 1979. Eight years later, Mr Pickles became leader of Bradford Council, where he first demonstrated his determination to cut waste from public services.
In 1992 he was elected to represent Brentwood and Ongar. He served various Shadow Ministerial positions before being promoted to the Shadow Cabinet in 2007, as Secretary of State for Communities & Local Government. He was Party Chairman from 2009 until the General Election, before resuming the DCLG brief.
As Secretary of State, Mr Pickles has been hailed as one of the Coalition's "star performers", setting the standard for cutting government waste whilst also piloting the Localism Act through Parliament., which has radically altered the relationship and funding stream that operates between central and local government.
